Details

Hwajeon (화전, “flower pancake”) is a traditional Korean seasonal rice cake, with its name literally meaning “flower” (화) and “pan-fried” (전) in Sino-Korean characters.
As the name suggests, it’s a small, flat rice cake made with glutinous rice flour (chapssalgaru), gently kneaded with water, shaped into rounds, and lightly pan-fried in sesame or pine nut oil.
Seasonal edible flowers are pressed on top, making the treat not only beautiful and fragrant, but also delicately sweet with a soft, gentle.

Hwajeon was traditionally enjoyed during special seasonal festivals and celebrations.
 • It was especially popular among upper-class women during the Joseon dynasty.
 • In spring, when women had limited chances to go outside, one rare and joyful outing was “Hwajeon-nori (화전놀이)”, where they would go flower viewing and cook flower pancakes outdoors together.
 • Hwajeon beautifully combines seasonal elegance with everyday practicality — a dessert that captures the spirit of nature and tradition.
